The Champaign Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and more than 200 law enforcement agencies across the state in a traffic safety campaign focused on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The high-visibility enforcement runs from June 20 through July 7, covering the Independence Day holiday.
“Champaign Police are committed to ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “We’re asking all residents to celebrate responsibly by planning ahead to designate a sober driver and avoiding impaired driving. Safety starts with smart decisions, including wearing a seatbelt and following traffic laws.”
The enforcement campaign will concentrate on arterial roads throughout Champaign. Officers will be watching for impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, and other unsafe driving behaviors. Violators may receive citations or written warnings.
To stay safe during the holiday, police recommend:
Designating a sober driver before going out.
Giving your keys to your designated driver.
Using a taxi, public transit, or ride-share if impaired.
Calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
Making sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt.
The effort is part of a statewide initiative funded by federal traffic safety grants through IDOT. Authorities hope the increased patrols will deter dangerous driving and reduce crashes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
